iPhone Killer? I sure hope so…

As summer rolls around, a new round of smart phones is due on the market. The Big Apple is inevitably going to release a new iPhone, supposedly, the iPhone 4G, while competitors will make more attempts to make the “iPhone Killer” that has been sought since the first generation iPhone. I’m really hoping someone succeeds, for one because competition competition breeds innovation. But also, because I’m tired of the iPhone. Admittedly, when Apple released the iPhone 3G, which, IMO, is the phone where Apple “got it right” for the first time, I was quick to buy one, ditching my really awesome Sprint sero plan for the shiny new toy.

But now, 2 years later, I’m tired of the crap is required baggage that comes along with the iPhone. Apple’s super-strict application development policy, their extra-tight grasp on the Phone OS, the required use of iTunes, one of the most bloated bloatwares in existence (I tried to learn to love iTunes, I really did)… Maybe I’m being overly dramatic (OK I am) but there are just a few things about the iPhone that drive me crazy. And because I can’t change these things (Apple’s iron fist controls everything, including the options on MY phone), it bothers me even more. Now, it is true that there are really very few things that I want to change - the interface is very good and easy to use and intuitive. But I’m still really bothered that I can’t change the things I want to change (without jailbreaking), use the software I want (even if Apple disapproves), etc.

The good news is that the iPhone killer may actually be here soon. Finally. And it might just come in the name of Google. The Andriod line has now surpassed the iPhone in market share (although this apparently accounts for all types of Droids, so it may not be a completely fair comparison). And the new Sprint HTC EVO 4G is looking like quite the contender - I mean, look at those specs and features!

We’ll see what Apple comes up with on the iPhone 4G. Most of its details are already leaked, and really they aren’t that impressive. I’m sure there will be a bit more, and I’m sure Steve Jobs will do a good job presenting them. Who knows, maybe I’ll be eating crow at the end of the summer…

But for now, I’m thinking the EVO will be the way to go…
